Digital Literacy

 

  • Use computer terminology appropriately:

    • parts – screen, keyboard, touchpad/mouse, mouse button, headphone jack, hard drive, pointing stick, USB port, power button, Ethernet port

    • Windows – desktop, icon (symbols used to represent a program or function), folder (open, close, minimize, maximize windows, resize), start, task bar, window, recycling bin, taskbar volume

    • understand the difference between hardware and software

    • know common operating systems

  • Responsible use and understanding of safety:

    • follow rules and procedures for responsible use of devices

    • know how to use a password and the importance of privacy

    • know and respect copyright law

  • Application Programs:

    • multitask by opening 2 or more applications

    • start an application using start menu and desktop icon

    • open, close, minimize, maximize, and resize program windows

    • create, name, save, modify, print, and exit documents

    • know when to use save and save as

    • understand the difference between saving to hard drive, network drive, cloud, removable disk

    • use menu commands and toolbars

    • use vertical and horizontal scroll bar

  • Keyboarding:

    • demonstrate proper hand-finger-body position

    • know and use the home row keys and correct finger placement and reaches

    • use correct finger reaches from home row to all alphabet keys

    • perform touch typing of home row keys and all alphabet keys

    • demonstrate use and understanding of cursor, spacebar, enter, shift, caps lock, arrow keys, backspace, and tab

    • keyboard for speed and accuracy

  • Internet

    • know internet safety rules

      • know private information: name, address, phone number, e-mail address

      • know the difference between a user name and a given name and surname

    • understand when and why the internet was started

    • know how a computer connects to the internet

    • know web browser terms and demonstrate use: hyperlink, back, forward, print & print selection

    • use tabbed browsing

    • perform simple searches using a search engine to research and gather information

      • understand and use keywords and search engine modifiers

    • create and use bookmarks

    • evaluate the accuracy and credibility of information

    • evaluate and identify characteristics of high-quality websites

    • use e-mail for formal and friendly purposes

    • understand e-mail netiquette

    • understand copyright laws

  • Understand and use Google Classroom, Google Earth, and Google Tour Creator:

    • understand how computers can aid in the presentation of ideas

    • use and navigate Google Classroom and complete assignments

    • use Google earth to locate geographic areas, measure distance, and create links

    • curate information from digital resources to create collections of artifacts
