State of Illinois Public Act 095-0869 states the following:

Each school may adopt an age-appropriate curriculum for Internet safety instruction of students in grades kindergarten through 12. However, beginning with the 2009-2010 school year, a school district must incorporate into the school curriculum a component on Internet safety to be taught at least once each school year to students in grade 3 or above.

The act further specifies that the unit of instruction must include:

  • Safe and responsible use of social networking websites, chat rooms, electronic mail, bulletin boards, instant messaging, and other means of communication on the Internet.

  • Recognizing, avoiding, and reporting online solicitations of students, their classmates, and their friends by sexual predators.

  • Risks of transmitting personal information on the Internet.

  • Recognizing and avoiding unsolicited or deceptive communications received online.

  • Recognizing and reporting online harassment and cyber-bullying.

  • Reporting illegal activities and communications on the Internet.

  • Copyright laws on written materials, photographs, music, and video.

The Galena Unit School District contracts with an outside service to cover items 1-6 of the act, while reinforcing safe and responsible use of the internet throughout technology instruction.  Copyright laws are covered within the Galena Unit School District technology curriculum as outlined on the grade level curriculum pages.
