Digital Literacy

 

  • Use computer terminology appropriately:

    • parts – screen, keyboard, touchpad/mouse, mouse button, headphone jack, pointing stick, USB port, power button

    • Windows – desktop, icon (symbols used to represent a program or function), folder (open, close, minimize, maximize windows, resize), start, task bar, window, recycling bin, taskbar volume

  • Responsible use and understanding of safety:

    • follow rules and procedures for responsible use of devices

    • know how to use a password and the importance of privacy

    • know and respect copyright law

  • Keyboarding:

    • demonstrate proper hand-finger-body position

    • know and use the home row keys and correct finger placement and reaches

    • use correct finger reaches from home row to all alphabet keys

    • perform touch typing of home row keys and all alphabet keys

    • demonstrate use and understanding of cursor, spacebar, enter, shift, caps lock, arrow keys, backspace, and tab

  • Application Programs:

    • multitask by opening 2 or more applications

    • start an application using start menu and desktop icon

    • open, close, minimize, maximize, and resize program windows

    • create, name, save, modify, print, and exit documents

    • know when to use save and save as

    • understand the difference between saving to hard drive and network drive

    • use menu commands and toolbars

    • use vertical and horizon scroll bar

  • Word Processing: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.2.A, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.6

    • create multiple paragraph documents using word wrap

    • understand and use the following tools:

      • margins

      • line spacing

      • cut-copy-paste

      • left and center align text

      • font size, color, and typeface

      • spelling and grammar check

      • undo and redo

    • insert clip art and use wrap text tool

    • insert text using the I beam pointer and arrow keys

  • Internet

    • understand that the internet is a network of computers around the world

    • know internet safety rules:

      • know private information: name, address, phone number, e-mail address

      • know the difference between a user name and a given name and surname

    • know how to key in an internet address (URL)

    • understand web browser terms and demonstrate use: URL (uniform resource locator), hyperlink, back,
      forward, home page, print

    • use the web browser toolbar to navigate between sites using back and forward

    • understand and use tabbed browsing

    • perform simple searches using a search engine:

      • understand and use keywords

      • research and gather information and document sources CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.8

      • reference tools (dictionary, glossary, thesaurus) CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.4.4.C

    • create and use bookmarks

    • use online multimedia and presentation tools: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.2.A, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.6

      • design and create presentations and collaborate with others

      • import and use graphics (change size and position)

      • incorporate audio recordings CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.4.5

    • understand copyright laws on written materials, photographs, music and video
